The European paper wasp (Polistes dominula) has a much calmer temperament than the common wasp. It has a wide range of hunting habits, including different insects and spiders. The European paper wasp is a social insect and absolutely worth learning more about its interesting behaviour. Originally native to Eurasia and North Africa, it has now spread to all continents, replacing native species there.

The ivy bees (Colletes hederae) are one of the 15 species of plasterer bees native to Germany.

๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŒž

Their nests are lined with a cellophane-like plastic using secretions from two glands at the end of the abdomen and on the labium ("lower lip"). That's why they are also called polyester bees. In Germany we call them silk bees "Seidenbienen".

๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒž

They live solitary in colonies, in sunny locations with no or sparse vegetation, where they dig their holes. Each species of plasterer bees specializes in the pollen of a particular plant, as does the ivy bee.

๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ๐Ÿ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ“ˆ

The distribution area of โ€‹โ€‹the ivy bees in Germany is concentrated in the Upper Rhine Plain and the Middle Rhine (where these photos were taken) as well as the Moselle Valley. However, since 2006 there has been a major wave of spread. The bees have also developed a novel preference for kindergarten sandboxes.

โœจ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’•

They are peaceful animals who were not disturbed at all by my presence. The females have a very weak stinger, which they only use in extreme danger. There are no known allergic reactions.

In contrast to most other tachinid flies, the larvae of the bug fly (Phasia hemiptera) do not parasitize on caterpillars but on stink bugs.

The male is easily identified by the wings with iridescent blue-black spots.

Beautiful shiny hoverfly!โœจ๐Ÿ

I suspect it is a Melanostoma species. Pretty sure a male.

The distance between the eyes of hoverflies is always narrower in males than in females.๐Ÿ‘€

Their larvae eat aphids and the adults feed on flower nectar and pollen.๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒธ

If insects can feel joy, what a wonderful world.๐ŸŒบ๐Ÿ

At least there are experiments that suggest something like fun in insects. For example, bumblebees like to play bumblebee ball.๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ

Common flesh fly ๐Ÿฅฉ
(Sarcophaga species)

It is almost impossible to tell the species apart by their outward appearance, and many can only be reliably identified by microscopic examination of the males' genitals.๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ”

In Germany, the gray flesh fly (Sarcophaga carnaria) is particularly common. There are various reports on the diet of adult flies from flower nectar, honeydew and the fluids that form on dung and carrion. The different information may be due to the difficulty in identifying the species. There is also different information about the larvae. Some species lay the larvae on carcasses and dung, others on earthworm entrances, and the parasitic larvae then crawl into the earthworm to develop inside. Some species use snails and other animals as hosts.๐ŸŒ

Humans can also be infected by some species, such as Sarcophaga barbata. The human larval infestation is called myasis and occurs mainly in tropical or subtropical regions.๐Ÿค•

Sunflowers are my favorite flowers๐ŸŒป Honey bees and meadow bugs also love them ๐Ÿ˜Š

The common meadow bug (Lygus pratensis) is a mirid bug. In January I introduced you to the mirid bug Deraeocoris ruber. Both wear a striking triangle on their backs. A major difference is that the meadow bug only sucks on plants.๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿฅค

It is native to almost the entire northern hemisphere and is very common. Because they are attracted to light, they are often found around lamps or when they stray into your home.

Help them out again! It's important to be good to animals. And it goes down well with other people too. Yesterday I was walking to the grocery store and an aphid landed in my eye. A woman approaching me saw how I carefully placed the animal in a hedge and was totally impressed.๐Ÿฅฐ Damn! Now I've revealed the aphid trick! ๐Ÿ˜œ

This little beauty is a mirid bug (Deraeocoris ruber)๐Ÿค ๐Ÿž

They inhabit forests, but occur mainly on sunny forest edges and open areas.๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒž

Mirid bugs prey on various small arthropods such as caterpillars, but particularly aphids.๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ›
The prey is killed and sucked out by a sting that is also painful for humans.๐Ÿงƒ๐Ÿ˜‹

But that rarely happens.๐Ÿ˜„

The species is useful and harmless.๐Ÿค— However, nature is full of phenomena. In Germany, 2016, a related species (Psallus varians) - within the same family (Miridae) - spontaneously developed an increased appetite for blood and attacked humans and animals in very large numbers.๐Ÿ˜ต๐Ÿฉธ๐ŸŒณ

The mirid bug is widespread in almost all of Europe (except the far north and few islands in the Mediterranean and Atlantic) - you find it in North Africa - and further east to the Caucasus. It has been introduced in some areas of North and South America.๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒŽ
