This green shield bug (Palomena prasina) has strayed into the stairwell... 🦸πŸͺ²

☠️ There was a risk of spiders, dehydration or drowning from the neighbor's dog's saliva.

πŸ•ΈπŸ•·πŸœπŸΆπŸ’¦

These and numerous other dangers lurk in the everyday life of this urban insect. πŸš—πŸ‘πŸŒ³

It lives in trees and bushes and sucks their sap.Actually, everyone in Germany should know it, with its bright green color and smelly secretion.

πŸ›©πŸͺ‚ It often just crashes into somewhere. Its flying abilities can certainly be described as enduring, but it lacks speed, precision and maneuverability.

β˜οΈπŸ”’My fingerprint has been manipulated.

Sunflowers are my favorite flowers🌻 Honey bees and meadow bugs also love them 😊

The common meadow bug (Lygus pratensis) is a mirid bug. In January I introduced you to the mirid bug Deraeocoris ruber. Both wear a striking triangle on their backs. A major difference is that the meadow bug only sucks on plants.πŸ’šπŸ₯€

It is native to almost the entire northern hemisphere and is very common. Because they are attracted to light, they are often found around lamps or when they stray into your home.

Help them out again! It's important to be good to animals. And it goes down well with other people too. Yesterday I was walking to the grocery store and an aphid landed in my eye. A woman approaching me saw how I carefully placed the animal in a hedge and was totally impressed.πŸ₯° Damn! Now I've revealed the aphid trick! 😜

This little beauty is a mirid bug (Deraeocoris ruber)🀠🐞

They inhabit forests, but occur mainly on sunny forest edges and open areas.🌳🌞

Mirid bugs prey on various small arthropods such as caterpillars, but particularly aphids.πŸŒΏπŸ›
The prey is killed and sucked out by a sting that is also painful for humans.πŸ§ƒπŸ˜‹

But that rarely happens.πŸ˜„

The species is useful and harmless.πŸ€— However, nature is full of phenomena. In Germany, 2016, a related species (Psallus varians) - within the same family (Miridae) - spontaneously developed an increased appetite for blood and attacked humans and animals in very large numbers.😡🩸🌳

The mirid bug is widespread in almost all of Europe (except the far north and few islands in the Mediterranean and Atlantic) - you find it in North Africa - and further east to the Caucasus. It has been introduced in some areas of North and South America.🌍🌎

Green shield bug,
Palomena prasina
(07/2021 in Oberursel)

Little stinker in its fourth instar. Two moults remain until adulthood. It's a very common European species. You can find them from North Africa across Europe to Central Asia. It prefers to live on deciduous trees (linden, alder), bushes, nettles and thistles. I found this one below a linden tree. In German we call them GrΓΌne Stinkwanze (green stink bug). My friends from North America have a very similar bug with that name (Chinavia hilaris). But they differ much in color in their larval stage and have a few small differences as adults. Both species are member of the Pentatomidae family, generally called shield bugs or stink bugs. They have in common that they release a pungent defensive spray when threatened, disturbed or crrrrushhhhed.πŸ’š

Oops! Post #404! Time for a bug report! That's my bud, the brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys). Since 2011, this species has been detected in Germany and comes originally from East Asia. They are also found in North and South America. Often on house walls, they sometimes get lost inside. They can't survive the winter in warm houses, so I left it free.πŸ•Š

🏨🐜 News from the insect hotel:

That's my bud, the stink bug! I thought of it as a different species, but thanks to a friendly hint I know that it's the introduced species Halyomorpha halys. Since 2011, this species has been detected in Germany and comes originally from East Asia.

It sat on my finger for about 8 minutes.☝ Then my patience was over. It has nothing to do with the little gift that made it to me.πŸ’©πŸ˜‚ I was hoping it would fly away, for recording.😐 It's very affectionate.πŸ˜…πŸ˜˜ This stink bug has been with me for at least a month now. Sometimes it lands on my desk and struggles to get back up.πŸ˜‚ Stupid sweet little bug!❀ I'm very happy about this roommate, but I've just read that they don't survive the room temperatures in winter. Next time I see it, I free it! πŸ€—
